Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A finely carved stone canopic vessel of a hefty form exhibiting warm russet and citrine hues. The llama exhibits characteristic camelid features such as a plump body, a perky tail, and a slender head with petite ears and frilled bangs raised above a wavy dewlap. A cavity carved into the back of the creature was intended to hold offerings of seeds, grain, or animal fat, and the entire canopa would be buried beneath the animals' corral to protect the llamas as well as their owners. Size: 3.4" L x 1.4" W x 2.4" H (8.6 cm x 3.6 cm x 6.1 cm)
