1825 Map, Plan of Yorktown in Virginia and Adjacent Country, Exhibiting the operations of the American French & English armies, during the Siege of that place in Oct. 1781. Sheet is irregularly trimmed, overall size 31 7/8" high, 21 3/4" wide, this engraved map shows Yorktown situated on the York River (Gloucester Point is seen on the opposite shore), surrounded by French and American troops to the south, British ships seen burning along the harbor to the north. The headquarters of the American and French commanders are indicated, including those of Gen. Washington, Comte de Rochambeau, the Marquis de Lafayette, Gen. Benjamin Lincoln, Gen. Henry Knox, Baron von Steuben, et al. Lines of troops and batteries of artillery are also noted in addition to British works lying outside the town. Troop movements are indicated by lines and are marked with letters; each corresponding letter is explained in the lower half of the map marked "Explanations" (surrounded by a floral border; a military panoply at the lower edge). Other features shown are forests, fields (including the field where "the British laid down their Arms"), roads, and creeks. Relief done in hachures. A small inset at upper right provides "References to the British Lines." The original map was hand-colored, attested to by the inclusion of a small engraved scroll designating the colors for the troops (in the original map) near the middle of the left edge. The print is laid down on a light board stock, paper is brittle, there are tears and and repairs around the map, a loss to the center left edge. Some browning and staining around the edges. Was framed by Newman Galleries, Philadelphia.
