Item Details
Description
North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A fantastic powder horn, carved from a cow horn. The horn has a slightly twisted profile, is carved with relief geometric motifs, and the exterior has been scrimshawed with a series of incised images close to the wider end. These include stylized fish, stars, canoe, gun, and other abstract shapes. There are also a few letters including "USA." Two perforations are drilled through the wide end, and a fiber cord is knotted through one. Powder horns, such as this fine example, were used by rifleman to hold gunpowder. Size: 11" L x 3" W (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
