Circa 1900 Japanese MEJI-Period Mother-of-Pearl and Gilt Lacquer Cabinet
CIRCA Circa 1900 Japanese MEJI-Period Mother-of-Pearl and Gilt Lacquer Cabinet
The rectangular frame fitted with a variety of drawers and doors, with pierced panels of flowers, birds and trees inset in the back, on a Chinese hardwood standThis exquisite Japanese hardwood shodana, or book cabinet, is a masterpiece of Meiji-period artistry. A study in depth and dimension, this amazing cabinet, almost certainly crafted of either zelkova or paulownia wood, was created as both a storage and display piece. Four compartments are hidden behind wonderful sliding doors, including one that is gently curved, inviting one deeper into the interior space. Double doors enclose a larger space, while three drawers on the bottom may have held items used for the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, or chado. Open spaces are framed by exceptional carving, and the entire structure is distinguished by intricate inlaid gilt bronze, and mother-of-pearl scenes of in the outstanding Shibayama manner. Japanese heraldry emblems of inlaid gilt bronze complete this spectacular piece. Also known as kazaridana dansu, or display cabinets, these magnificent chests are among the most exquisite items ever made by Japanese furniture craftsmen. To find one in such complete and exceptional condition is quite rare, circa 1900.
