Pair Antique 1920's Paul Herzel Pompeian Bronze German Shephard Dog Bookends. Each piece is signed PAUL HERZEL. Bookends appear to be circa 1920Â’s 1876-1956) German born, Paul came to the United States at the age of 7 with his family. At the age of 22, Herzel began to study painting at the St. Louis Art School. Many of Herzel's sculpture designs were sold to companies such as the Pompeian Bronze Company, reproducing his works as bookends, ashtrays, lamp bases and statuettes. He is primarily known for his sculpture, although he completed hundreds of paintings and drawings throughout his career. In 1915 he won the Barnett Prize of the National Academy of Design in 1915. Each has some wear. 8 1/2 in tall by 5 in by 3 in.
