Vintage United States passport signed by Secretary of State William H. Seward (1801 - 1872), the Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Secretary throughout the American Civil War and Reconstruction, Seward was injured in an assassination attempt on the same night Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth in April 14, 1865. He recovered. Seward later purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. The passport is made out to Edward H. Stephenson and dated to December 21, 1864. Good condition, with folds in paper and some wear. Seward's signature is in good condition, while Stephenson's has been crossed out.
