Description
Quadrangular jardiniere ornamented with turtles and birds in high-relief enamel. These three dimensional pieces are very rare and were only made for about 10 years, circa 1885. Originating from a mold cast after an Asian bronzed piece, the entire surface was then hand-colored with enamel glazes. A similar example is located in the Musee de Longwy.
This has the design form and elements of Art Deco even though it predates the Deco era, combined with Ming Dynasty enameling. The best of both worlds. The turtles are delightful, animated, and well-detailed. It is easy to see how the Art Deco movement copied from much earlier forms.
Provenance- collection of Mrs D. Duffy, Santa Barbara, CA.
