Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Juneau, Tlingit, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A gorgeous and decorative mask of an eagle, hand carved from wood. This visage has both human and bird characteristics, which were used to symbolize transitions or transformations. The face is comprised a wide mouth with a shallow depression, and a hooked nose or beak curves downward, nearly touching the lower lip. The eyes are large and circular under dramatic brows. The cheeks are painted with the curled feet and talons of the bird. All is painted in black, red, sienna, turquoise, and black. A label on the interior attributes this mask to Geoff Kusitaan Campbell, an unknown artist. This piece has a modern wire on verso for suspension. Size: 12" L x 8.5" W (30.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
