The composition includes a lone figure at the center, ambling along a trail and surrounded by lush deciduous trees and conifers. All is delineated in a brilliant palette of aqua and azure blues, verdant spring greens, as well as mauve, rose, and golden yellow hues. Coogan's Impressionistic style, replete with adept brushwork and command of the palette knife, in concert with his keen perception of color, are quite impressive. Coogan had formal training at the Art Students League in New York City as well as the University of New Hampshire. He has worked in various styles over the years, from figure drawing to portraiture to abstraction.

This painting comes to us from the Estate of William Draper. Fairfield Coogan was a friend of William Draper's, and his wife Edith was godmother to his daughter Maggi Draper.

Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
