Description
This dramatic and imposing helmet mask in wood represents the head of a male dignitary. The mask has been embellished with various shells and beads and is quite an elaborate example and can be associated to a genre of mask known as Bongo. Bongo masks appear during initiation rites and at funerals. Concealing a dancer’s identity, the wooden helmet mask would have been accompanied by a skirt and collar made from freshly cut raffia palm leaves. The erratic and unpredictable movements during the masked performance suggest the untamed forest world where many potential dangers lie for the inexperienced. The Mask measures 16 x 10 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Provenance: Kilim Brown Collection, Belgium. Ex Merton Simpson Collection, NYC.
