Near East, Turkey, Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous ceremonial dagger known as a khanjar with a steel blade and silver, nickel brass, and brass fittings and sheath. The khanjar dagger is used throughout the Middle East and has a characteristic "J" shaped sheath and curved blade, as seen here. The blade is set into a brass handle with a 60% to 90% silver overlay of embossed foliate designs. Additional pieces of nickel-bass are applied on top and incised with linear shapes. The pommel features a broad crescent shape. The sheath is similarly made of brass with silver overlays with foliate patterning. Two brass flanges extend from the sides with openings for suspending the sheath from a sash or belt. Size in sheath: 16.675" L x 2.675" W (42.4 cm x 6.8 cm); blade: 9" L x .9" W (22.9 cm x 2.3 cm); quality of silver: 60% to 93%

Old repairs along handle, with infill along perforations. Additional cracks and perforations along pommel and grip. Chips and losses to pommel and heavy, dark patina on all metal surfaces. Indentations chips, and perforations to sheath. Old repairs to flanges - reattached and welded. Tip of sheath reattached and welded in place. Modern cloth thread on flanges for suspension.
