Wanting a1, b1, and Ss6, being the initial leaf ("The minde of the frontispiece"), one preface leaf, and the final leaf (colophon). Period speckled calf boards, rebacked. ********************************* FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF SANDY'S TRANSLATION OF OVID. The first 5 books had been published 5 years prior, before he set out for Virginia to serve as Secretary to the Virginia Company, and the remaining books were translated in the colony upon his arrival. Condition
Front flyleaf with 20th c. former owner inscriptions and pastedowns soiled, engraved title with tissue repair (verso) and cropped margins, first 6 leaves with dampstain to upper portions and some lighter unobtrusive stains to last several leaves, else a clean copy with only a few other instances of minor soiling/stains.
