Description
1856 color lithograph entitled "View of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville & Monticello Taken from Lewis Mountain". Lower left : "Drawn From Nature & Print, In Colors By E. Sachse & Co." Lower center: "Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1856, by Casimir Bohn, in the Clerks Office of the District Court, of the District of Columbia." Rare and important print showing the early grounds of the University of Virginia, including the recently constructed Annex to the Rotunda and the Anatomical Theater, both of which would be destroyed by fire, in 1895 and 1888, respectively. The buildings of Charlottesville can be seen in the distance, a steam engine puffing through town trailing a swath of black smoke, and Jefferson's Monticello watches over the scene from its mountain top. Appears to be professionally restored; close examination reveals a tear in upper right quarter going about half way across, another tear bottom center. Side and top margins trimmed. Old pencil marks mostly removed but faintly visible. Some toning esp in bottom margin. Sight, approx. 21" x 29", frame, approx. 31 1/2" x 40"
