Description
DESCRIPTION: Folwell School of Philadelphia circa 1810-1815. Needlepoint, watercolor and ink on paper. Scene of shepherdess with two sheep in the countryside. Unsigned. Painted, wood frame. PROVENANCE: From a Philadelphia family. The consignor is a direct descendant of Mary Rittenhouse (1795-1873). MEASUREMENT: 16” x 13” overall in frame. CONDITION: Quarter inch hole present in the needlepoint of the house. Threads near roof line appear to loosening. Wearing present on the frame, particularly lower right corner. Reverse of frame has tear that was repaired with clear tape. Some staining on reverse is also present. NOTES: Elizabeth Folwell ran an embroidery school in Philadelphia during early 19th C. Samuel Folwell, her husband, would design memorials and Neoclassical scenes for the students to embroider. Samuel sketched the scene on silk, the student would complete the embroidery then Samuel completed the inscription, sky and other painted details.
