The rare first edition of what can be considered the culminating masterpiece in the career of one of, if not the, greatest Russian novelist. In a multi-dimensional study of parricide, Dostoevsky portrays the disintegration of the Russian family and society in the 1870s, attacks socialism and atheism, satirizes political reforms of the period, and deals with the problem of human guilt. An exceptional copy in what is undoubtedly a Russian binding of the period, with small rubberstamps (of a bookseller?) in Russian on the front free endpapers; ownership rubberstamps of Dr, J. Gabrilowitch of Finland to the front pastedowns of both volumes, the half-title of the first, and the title page of the second. Both half-titles are present.
