Description
Andy Miki
Inuit, Eskimo Point/Arviat, (1918-1983), a carved stone sculpture, abstract animal, signed in syllabics.
height 3 1/2in, length 5 3/4in
Footnotes:
The present lot is representative of Andy Miki's work, which features a keen artistic eye for line and balance and a subtlety informed by both the larger Arviat regional style and by the tough, unforgiving nature of the local stone which makes overworking and fine detail nearly impossible.
Miki's personal 'oeuvre is virtually entirely composed of animal forms rendered with a minimum of detail or identifying features... Nevertheless, for an artist such as Miki, be they depictions of a dog, bear or bird, these often-ambiguous images remained meaningful to him as evocations of such,' Zepp, Norman, 'What Makes the Sculpture of Arviat Different?' Inuit Art Quarterly, 24 July, 2020.
Provenance
The Wendy and Les Fisher Collection of Canadian Inuit Sculpture, Chicago, IL
