NAME: Death Valley Scotty (titled on stretcher)

CONDITION: One 1 1/2" tear repaired with patch and corresponding inpainting. Minor craquelure.

BIOGRAPHY:
Edna V. Onderdonk was born Edna Vivian Howe on February 13, 1889, at O'Neill, Nebraska, the daughter of Carlos E. Howe and Frances Amelia Coburn.She married first, on April 9, 1913, the photographer Ralph Hester Barnes at O'Neill, Nebraska on April 9, 1913. The marriage probably lasted into the 1920s, and was definitely over when Ralph moved to Montana in 1930. She did additional photography work in Los Angeles in the 1920s, but made her living as a stenographer and secretary. In 1928 she was working as the secretary and treasuser at the University of Southern California College of Music.She married second, on January 2, 1933, Morris Pomeroy Onderdonk. She continued to work as a stenographer, and in 1940 displayed charcoal drawings at a Los Angeles show. She was by 1942 a member of the California Art Club. In 1951 she was one of the charter members of the Twenty-Nine Palms Artists Guild.After her husband's death, she endowed a trust fund in honor of needy artists, in memory of her husband.She is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California in the Court of Freedom, next to Morris Onderdonk.
