Description
A Tall and Important Silver Spice Tower. Berlin, circa 1765. Height: 32 cm. Hallmarked.
An extremely impressive spice tower, with a rounded, delicate form.
The spice container was designed and executed by an expert silversmith using classical architectural elements from 18th-century Western Europe. As is well known, many spice containers from this period were modelled after European church buildings and were therefore known and described as spice "towers".
This handsome example, made in Berlin, was designed in a lovely, rounded shape. Its pierced and engraved decorative designs are hand-executed by the talented silversmith.
The tower is constructed of a rounded body of two levels, carried on a footed round base and topped a flag. Its central section is adorned with engraved and pierced foliage, four twisted pillars surmounted by pineapple-shaped finials, and a wide, hinged door for inserting and protecting the spices. The upper level encloses a hanging bell and is topped by tall a conical stem and waving flag.
