For your consideration is an outstanding, original, fabric collage on handmade paper by Michele Oka Doner (27.25”h x 33”w). Per Michele Oka Doner, she made this work at the first paper making class taught at Wayne State University in the early 1970s and was later acquired by the Kmart collection. In the last 15 years, Michele Oka Doner has returned to paper making and work on paper. Yet, this particular artwork has historical value, for it is a rare work of art on handmade paper from the beginning of Michele Oka Doner's artistic career. It is in excellent vintage condition. Michele Oka Doner is an internationally renowned artist whose career spans over five decades. The breadth of her artistic production encompasses sculpture, design objects, furniture, jewelry, public art and video installations. Michele Oka Doner's work is fueled by a lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world, from which she derives her formal vocabulary. Her work encompasses materials including glass, bronze and silver and in a variety of scales she mirrors the world around her, from the small and intimate to the large and magnificent. Michele is well known for creating over 40 public art installations throughout the United States and in Europe, including Radiant Site at New York's Herald Square subway (1987), Flight at Washington's Reagan International Airport and A Walk on the Beach at The Miami International Airport (1995-2010) which features 9000 bronze sculptures inlaid over a mile and a quarter long concourse of terrazzo with mother-of-pearl - it is one of the largest public artworks in the world. Oka Doner has created collaborative collections with Steuben in glass, Christofle in silver and Nymphenburg in porcelain. Her public art projects can be found in courthouses, public libraries, hospitals, museums, universities, as well as in public parks and transportation centers in the United States. She designed the costumes and sets for George Balanchin's A Midsummer Night's Dream for the Miami City ballet which debuted in March 2016. A solo exhibition of her work was shown in 2016 at the Perez Museum of Art Miami. In addition to solo exhibitions at David Gill Gallery in 2015 and 2018 “Michele's artwork can be found in the collections of Museo des Arts Decoratifs Paris, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum of American Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, St. Louis Art Museum, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Yale Art Gallery and the Princeton University Art Museum. Among the numerous publications on her work are three monographs Natural Seduction (Hudson Hills Press, 2003), Workbook (Oka Press, 2004), and Human Nature (Edizioni Charta, 2008).
