Papua New Guinea Asmat Ancestor Kawe Figure, Early 20th Century
carved wood, reddish brown patina, with characteristically elongated limbs and "hanging" feet
These figures represent the first humans, or "asmat." In the creation myth, a great cultural hero "fumeripit" carved many large human figures. As he began to play his drum, the figures came to life as the original people and formed the first clans.

The figure is in overall very good condition, consistent with age and use. A few minor areas of splitting to wood at head.
