Rare British Pattern 1738 Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Pistol
1738-Dated French & Indian War to American Revolutionary War Era Use, Rare British Military Pattern 1738 Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Pistol, "TOWER", Very Fine.
This Rare British Military Pattern 1738 Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Pistol is 19" in overall length. It has a 11.75", .57 caliber round steel smooth-bore barrel with faint remnants of 2 Tower Proofs, a small "CROWN" Inspector mark on barrel tang, and the Barrel Makers mark "F G" (Farmer & Galton who were contractors to the Tower of London Ordnance). The barrel has remnants of Regimental marking Engraved on the top portion of the barrel, that appear to stand for "-- KING'S OWN DRAGOON GUARDS". The lock is Marked: "TOWER" with "1738" and a "CROWN" over "GR" (King George II) and a smaller "CROWN" over the "BROAD ARROW" (Government ownership). The frizzen spring has a steel platform built up to provide more "spring" with standard Brass regulation furniture. This Pistol is in its original Flintlock configuration. Its Stock is marked with the "Stores Keeper" mark just above the tail of lock plate, and has a small "CROWN" over "7" Inspector mark just above the edge of the right side of its trigger guard. The cock is a period replacement. It is our opinion that the stock was made with two pieces of wood or the foreword 5.5" of the fore end was repaired during the period of use and is NOT a recent repair. The stock has a stress crack at the wrist, yet is fully solid with typical normal minor scratches and dings from years of handling and service. All steel surfaces have light salt and pepper rust pitting (some areas worse than others). Complete with its wood ram rod with a brass tip and in good mechanical working order. A nice example of perhaps the most graceful and desirable of all the British Military Pattern Pistols, which very well may have seen military service in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. See: British Military Pistols and Associated Edged Weapons 1603-1887. pages 87-88, by Robert Brooker c. 2016 and BATTLE WEAPONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION by George C. Neumann c. 1998, pages 14, 234.
