Sailors' woolworks are often referred to as 'Woolies', and were produced from the 1840's until the early 20th century, their decline coinciding with the First World War. Such woolwork pictures rarely display the name of the ship or the artist responsible. Although 'Woolies' primarily depict ships, other recurring motifs include flags, national symbols and landscapes.

According to the written inscription to the reverse, the present picture was previously in the collections of British artists Denton Welch (1915-1948) and later Noël Adeney (1890-1978).
