Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase III to IV, ca. 350 to 650 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a stylized jaguar laying recumbent with all four legs tucked alongside its muscular body. Highly burnished and shown in hues of red-orange and creamy yellow, the fearsome feline peers forward with almond-shaped eyes and has puffy jowls, a narrow nose, perky ears, and black-painted whiskers and pupils. A lengthy stirrup-shaped handle arches from atop the head to the base of the tail, and a gently corseted spout projects from the middle. A fine feline example!
