Item Details

Description

Antique silver plate over brass desk box. Lined with red fabric, and measuring 10 1/4 inches wide, by 8 1/2 deep, by 3 1/2 high. Lid to box is a framed relief scene depicting several quadrigae charioteers, with whips held high, racing through a Greek city. Purchase receipt dated 1979, from a shop in Athens, Greece, for 6,000 Drachma (about $25 US at that time). Though unsubstantiated, invoice claims box to be 180 years old at that time of purchase. Exact age unknown, but would appear 19th Century at the latest. Box shows aged repairs to hinge, and missing lock. Red lining is loose, with a few holes. Box is in structurally good condition, with no dents or holes.
