Sanford “Sandy” Koufax (1935- ) was a left-handed pitcher for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers between 1955 and 1966, becoming the youngest pitcher to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame at age 36. Although his career was curtailed by arthritis by age 30, he was the first major league pitcher to pitch a perfect game, and is highly ranked among other professional baseball pitchers. Koufax is also one of the most well-known Jewish athletes; his decision to abstain from pitching during the first game of the 1965 World Series to mark Yom Kippur drew national attention.
