Description
Depicting the Foundering of a Sailing Ship, captioned at bottom "Ship Abner Stetson, Capt. Robinson, January 7th, 1857". Oil on canvas, unsigned, housed in the original gold painted gesso frame, OS: 34" x 46", SS: 23 1/2" x 34 1/2". Untouched, fine craquelure, missing corner piece. Ship Abner Stetson was built in 1856, in Damariscotta, Maine. She survived this difficulty, but seems to have been lost during the Civil War.
