Beatty, John Wesley (American, 1850-1924), Portrait of a Pensive Man, 1876, charcoal and graphite drawings on paper, 15 X 14 inches, signed and dated. John Wesley Beatty was the first director of the Department of Fine Arts at the Carnegie Institute; he organized and oversaw the development of the Carnegie International. In addition, along with George Hetzel, he opened the Pittsburgh Art School and involved himself in many other functions directly related to the promotion of artists and art in Pittsburgh and beyond. As an artist, John Beatty began as a silver engraver in Pittsburgh before going to Munich to study formally. Upon his return, his passion was painting but most of his activity was in the area of illustrating and etching.
