Description
Henry (Harry) Chase (American, 1853-1889), oil on canvas, 1879, shoreline with beached boat and figures in the shallow water, signed H. Chase lower right, "A Windy Day" / Coast of Holland inscribed verso, below signature inscribed "Scheveningen 1879", framed behind glass in handsome gilt frame, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age including some craquelure, etc., ss: 19 5/8" h. x 35 5/8" w. [This piece was painted in Scheveningen sometime between March 1879 and October 1879, while Harry Chase was studying under Mesdag. A solo show and auction of Chase's works was held on March 23, 1880 at Pettes & Leathe in St. Louis, MO. An illustrated catalog was created by Chase, with pen & ink sketches of six selected works, including "A Windy Day -- Coast of Holland", which was listed as entry No. 50 in the catalogue. It sold for $137.50, purchased by Marc S. Holmes of St. Louis. Marc and his wife moved to Chicago in the 1890s, and presumably took the paintings with them there. More information about this piece and Harry Chase available including scans of auction catalog & logbook courtesy of catalog raisonné compiler. Please contact us for more information.]
