MARCEL DYF 1899-1985 FRENCH PROVENCAL FLOWER MARKET SCENE OIL ON CANVAS. Magnificent oil on canvas by important French artist. Perfect condition, original frame. Framed 77cm byh 68cm, Without frame size 61cm by 50cm. Signed and countersigned on reverse.

Marcel Dyf was born Marcel Dreyfus in Paris in a family of industrialists from Alsace. He showed very early a skill for drawing and painting and eventually decided to devote himself to art. In 1923 he settled in in Arles then in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where he stayed for twenty years. His work includes scenes from popular life and Arlesian and Camargue folklore. His style was influenced by the impressionism. During the Second World War,he entered the resistance in the maquis, then the war ended was divided between his workshop in Paris and the South. In 1959,he moved to the Paris region of Bois d'Arcy where he worked until his death. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, the Salon d'automne and the Salon des Tuileries and on the French Riviera. From 1956, his better recognized talent led him to the international scene. During the 1960s and 1970s, Dyf began to exhibit his work in London, Canada, and the United States. Frost and Reed in London, UK, exhibited his work in 1955, 1987, and 1990. The Musee Arlaten in Arles, France, and the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, MA, have the artist’s work as part of their permanent collections.
