Description
A Chinese yellow-ground tablecloth dating from the 18th century. The tablecloth features several panels arranged in a concentric pattern. The innermost panel is an orange-ground square of a gold thread dragon chasing flaming pearls among ruyi clouds with smaller dragons over a wave and rock motif. The top of this panel features scholarly objects. This section is bordered by a yellow-ground panel with phoenixes in landscape scenes. This yellow section is bordered by a black-ground panel with a dragon pattern. The whole tablecloth has a fabric backing with a red paisley pattern.
Dimensions are: 70 1/2 inches tall X 73 inches wide, 179.1 cm X 185.4 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is wear to the black border panel. Pulled threads throughout. There are areas of significant separation and fading. The backing shows areas of repair.
Provenance: From a private collector in Southern California.
