Description
This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, done in the Cubist style of Jean Metzinger (French, 1883-1956). Image depicts a pale grey cat, curled in a vibrant patchwork of color. A hand-painted inscription at lower right corner reads, "Metzinger". This framed piece measures approximately 24" x 29".
Reverse side of piece features a number of ink stamps.
Jean Metzinger (French, 1883-1956) was a painter, theorist, critic, writer, and poet who contributed to the first theoretical work on Cubism. He was considered a neo-Impressionist painter and, later, a Divisionist and Fauvist. Metzinger's written works on Cubism even informed the principles of quantum theory. A deeply felt and widely respected titan of the early 20th century, Jean Metzinger continues to be a much sought-after artist in today's world.
