This lot consists of a pastel illustration on paper, done in the expressive style of Joan Mitchell (American, 1925-1992), framed under glass. This brilliant image conjures the energy of the ocean surf -- emerald green and deep sky blue intermingle to create a revitalizing teal effect. Modern and understated, this piece would be a strong addition to any collection. Handwritten graphite inscription at lower right corner reads, "Joan Mitchell". Framed dimensions approximately 28.75" x 24.75".

Reverse side of piece features a newspaper clipping, a black ink stamp, and a paper label with a typewritten inscription that reads as follows:

"JOAN MITCHELL. Untitled. 1977. 24" x 20"."

Joan Mitchell (American, 1925-1992) was an abstract expressionist painter and printmaker who was born in Chicago, Illinois. Mitchell was one of a select few of female artists who defined her era. Among her contemporaries were Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, and Helen Frankenthaler. Mitchell's prints and paintings were exhibited in a number of solo shows during her lifetime, and are now on display in major museums across Europe and the United States.
