Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful and large pottery vessel, the piriform body painted in black on a red ground with four circular crest-like motifs, all featuring dense lattice patterns surrounded by repeating circles. The exterior of the neck is decorated with a register of frets, and the interior of the rim boasts elaborate curvilinear motifs. The cylindrical neck projects upwards to a flared rim, and two applied lug handles are situated equidistantly on the body. The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery. Size: 12.8" W x 11.9" H (32.5 cm x 30.2 cm).
