Item Details
Description
1st century BC-1st century AD. A mixed group of bronze fittings comprising: a shallow domed boss; rectangular fittings with loops to the top; a ring with sloping wall; a tapering sheet-metal fitting; a tubular fitting with series of raised ribs to the exterior. For parts of a similar composed armour see Negin, A., Kamisheva, M., 'Armour of the Cataphractarius from the “Roshava dragana burial mound' in Archaeologia Bulgarica, vol.XXII, 2018, pp.45-70. 110 grams total, 1.9-14.3cm (3/4 - 5 1/2"). From the Abelita family collection, acquired London, UK, 1980-2015. The fragments of armour can belong to the composite protective equipment of a Romano-Thracian cavalryman, made of laminated bronze and iron. The shallow domed boss, combined with the ring with sloping wall, can be the top of a helmet of Sarmatian typology, while the tapering sheet metal fitting a fragment of the circular protection of arm or leg. The tubular fitting can be combined with the rectangular fittings to combine a side armour fastening. Remains of iron are still visible inside one of the rectangular fittings. [9, No Reserve]
