Item Details
Description
Late 3rd-early 2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of bronze stamp seals, six typed and signed scholarly notes issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (V-532) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 37 x 36 x 9 mm. This is roughly round, with originally flat compartmented and open-work face, and flat back on which there is a semi-circular handle. The design consists of a central circle within a Greek cross, and the ends of the arms of this cross splay out and join the next arm on each side. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer edge is worn down and the whole is a little bent, but the design remains entirely clear.'; (V-340) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 46 x 46 x 16 mm. This is roughly round, with flat face and flat back on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design consists of a Greek cross within a plain outer band divided into 12 segments. The design is both compartmented and open-work. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is dented on the outer rim, one small section of which is missing, and the whole piece is slightly bent, but it is generally sound as to the metal.'; (U-9) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 50 x 50 x 15 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central square, from each corner of which a 'petal' extends to the plain outer band which surrounds the whole. Between the 'petals' a strut from the middle of each side of the square supports a crescent. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The rim is slightly dented, but otherwise the piece is in good condition. Pressed earth and a little incrustation on the surface could be removed.'; (T-870) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45 x 44 x 15 mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of an inner small circular band supporting a rosette of nine petals within an outer plain band which is divided into four segments by short strokes. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is an attractive piece and in good condition, only the outer rim is a little bent-over. The metal is clean and has been conserved.'; (R-689) 'A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45 x 46 x 17 mm. This is roughly round with a scalloped outer edge. The design is both compartmented and open-work. It consists of a central Greek cross, the ends of which merge into the scalloped outer edge,a design which leaves four heart-shaped spaces around the centre. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design and in very good condition.'; (V-789) A Stamp Seal of Bronze, 45 x 44 x 15 mm. This is round, with scalloped outer edge, flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a kind of rosette: a small central circle divided into two equal halves, and around it eight 'petals' reaching the plain outer band, and from one side of each 'petal' a further strut to the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is heavy incrustation on the surface, which could be removed.' 225 grams total, 36-50 mm (1 1/2 - 2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; and accompanied by six original typed and signed scholarly notes by the Professor.
