Description
John Andrew & Son Photogravure of Edward S. Curtis Native American Portrait, Mosa Mojave.Printed on bottom left: Mosa Mojave Center: From Copyright Photograph 1903 by E. S. Curtis. Right: Photogravure John Andrew & Son. Print 16" x 20" Frame size 24" x 30" Beautifully framed and matted under glass, sealed paper reverse. Excellent condition. Prior to scanning, the vintage photogravure was professionally conserved to restore the print to its original appearance. After conservation, the images are prepared and optimized for printing with pigment-based inks and 100% cotton paper to ensure archival stability and quality that aligns with Curtis[x=#8217/] original intent. This process ensures that each image is faithfully created to the original intent of Edward S. Curtis. "It would be difficult to conceive of a more thorough aboriginal than this Mohave girl. Her eyes are those of the fawn of the forest, questioning the strange things of civilization upon which it gazes for the first time. She is such a type as Father Garces may have viewed on his journey through the Mohave country in 1776." By Edward S. Curtis, The North American Indian, Portfolio II, Plate no. 61, 1908. Originally photographed in 1903.Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) was a professional photographer known for his images of Native Americans and of the American West. Around 1895 Curtis began to photograph American Indians in the Seattle area. He joined the 1899 Harriman Expedition to Alaska as the expedition's official photographer and spent the summer of 1900 with George Bird Grinnell on a trip to document the Sun Dance on the Piegan Reservation in Montana. These experiences fueled Curtis' interest in American Indians and their culture and he set out to document every North American tribe before they "vanished." These photographs became the basis for his twenty volume "The North American Indian," a set of books which combined ethnographic descriptions and high-quality photogravures. John Andrew & Son (est.1869) was an engraving firm in Boston, Massachusetts.Date: Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance:
