Description
A Sasanian orange carnelian domed seal with a Gopatshah.
Sasanian Persian, 224 - 651 CE.
Dimension: 2x1cm.
On its truncated round surface, it is engraved in intaglio a winged human-headed bull, or a Gopatshah, and pahlavi inscriptions around it. A Gopatshah, in Iran mythology, is the king of bulls and ancester of all beneficient who lives in the paradise along with Gayomard (the first human-like living being and ancester of all humans).
Private Peking collection formed around 2000.
