Description
Offered in this lot is a stunning Neoclassical style bronze, Griffin sculpture on a wooden base. The Griffin is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts, and the eagle the king of the birds, by the Middle Ages, the Griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Since classical antiquity, griffins were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions. In medieval heraldry, the Griffin became a Christian symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine. Griffins appear in art as far back as 3000 BC. This Griffin measures 8" X 6" X 2" and is on a wooden stand of brown and black that measures 7 3/4" X 4 1/2" X 2". This Griffin is in very good condition.
