About the artist: Charles Durant began to study painting in his hometown, Lille; here he receives an urban scholarship, for which he then lives and studies for two years in Paris (at the Suis Academy). In Paris, he adopted the pseudonym Carolus-Duran, with whom he signed his work until the end of his life. At the first time of training, Carolus-Duran copies the paintings of the Louvre, especially Leonardo da Vinci; in parallel with this, he begins to write original canvases.
In 1860, the young artist receives an award at the Vicar competition. In 1861 he went to study in Italy, lives in Rome, Venice, is detained for several weeks in Pompeii, and in 1866 he returns to Paris. During the period from 1861 to 1866, Carolus-Duran created many paintings, capturing scenes from Italian everyday life.
In 1866, a great success of the artist was his painting "Killer", bought by the city of Lille. For this picture, Carolus-Duran received so much money that he carried out a study trip to Spain in 1867-1868, during which he was especially interested in the work of Diego Velazquez. After returning to France, Carolus-Duran marries the artist Pauline-Marie Croisette, opens a large art studio and recruits students. Since the late 60s of the XIX century, the artist has become a recognized portrait painter, one of the most popular and appreciated in Paris. In his works, he does not flatter the customer, he does not follow the elegance of the pose, but the conformity to human nature. In 1869, a friendship was struck between Carolus-Duran and artists Eduard Manet, Zachary Astryuk and Eduard Sain.
Since about 1875, the artist turns to historical and genre painting, for which he studies the work of Peter Paul Rubens and Paolo Veronese. Receives and carries out government orders, for example, performs ceiling painting in the halls of the Louvre "The Triumph of Maria Medici" (1878). In 1879, the artist receives the Medal of Honor of the Paris Salon. In 1890, together with his wife and several other artists, he created the National Society of Fine Arts. In 1900 he was elected Honorary President of the French Academy. In 1904, Carolus-Duran was awarded the title of Great Officer of the Legion of Honor. In 1905 he was elected director of the French Academy in Rome.
