Description
Charles-Francois Delamarche (1740-1817), the founder of the family firm was one of the most important French geographers and mapmakers of the second half of the eighteenth century. Successor to Nicolas Sanson (1600 – 1667), Robert de Vaugondy (1686 – 1766), and Rigobert Bonne (1727 – 1794), whose atlases he reprinted. Also taught geography. In addition to maps and globes, his works include a treatise on the use of the sphere and celestial and terrestrial globes. In the treatise, he illustrates both the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems, as well as listing all the ancient and modern constellations. His son Félix Delamarche (18th century – 1st half 19th century) continued his work. This Atlas was published by Felix Delamarche in 1826 , some of the maps are dated 1824 ( North and south America ) , 1825 , and 1826 , the map of France with its 86 department is from 1831 , while it has the correct marking number ( 9) it might be a replacement .There is no mention of the recent history of Napoleon I in the historical part , it stop at Charlemagne .There are some writing from 1844 referring to a possible love story with list of women , the writing is clearly from a young adult .This atlas is for a collector who enjoy geography and looking to the past .
13 x 10 inches , Félix Delamarche, mechanical engineer for globes and spheres, Paris, 1826. Binding recently restored , Condition :good, title page, followed by a sheet of: somaire of cards with number , 36 plates inset on double page engraved on copper, all mounted on tabs, most of the geographical with outlines and watercolor limits. Plate 1 represents a: Table of the different systems of the world by Delamarche, 19 plates concern the modern geography of which a world map, 16 plates concern the old geography, small trace of use on the end of the page , some stain , some writing on the page ( date from 1844 ). Felix Delamarche, successor of Robert de Vaugondy, Geographer of the King. Atlas complete,light toning and occasional faint age spots; some marginal handling marks .
