"In the year 1832 Abraham Lincoln enetered into a storekeeping partnership with another young man, named William F Berry, in the frontier town of New Salem, Illinois. The venture was a failure. [Campaign biographers set] a pattern which biographers of the sixteenth President have scrupulously followed, their accounts differing from one another only in the choice of words with which they blame one partner and excuse the other for the little commercial calamity. It is the purpose of the present book to re-examine the facts in the case without prejudice or bias, and without straining to deify a man whom history and all mankind have already honored. The present account is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first thorough and honest record, supported by existing documents and other credible evidence, of the short but eventful life of the firm which existed "in the name of Berry and Lincoln.""
