"Before purchasing this book, I looked online for the 'best' book on Lincoln. This book was determined to be the most readable biography for a first Lincoln book. It didn't disappoint! Lincoln may have been the main reason that USA is a single country today. He did what he felt had to be done to keep the country together. He summoned both Republicans (his own party) and Democrats to his cause, in his quest to make use of the most effective politicians in each role. His course of action was not always popular with his peers. He wasn't a general; however, he played a big role in having the best generals for the Union in the right place at the right time. While emancipation of the slaves wasn't his driving goal, he eventually saw this as the best course to win the war. It would be hard to imagine politicians of his calibre today where partisan politics drives everything.. I doubt this man would last two weeks in politics today. He clearly possessed superior analytical thinking ability and he definitely earned and deserved the nick-name 'Honest Abe' which makes it easy to like him. The book itself shows honesty in not portraying him as something more than human. Benjamin Platt Thomas (1902-1956) was an American historian and biographer of Abraham Lincoln. In 1952, he published a best-selling one volume biography on Lincoln entitled "Abraham Lincoln: A Biography" (Knopf, 1952).
