Description
DESCRIPTION: Pair of Steuben Gold Aurene melon- ribbed perfume bottles with mirror black floral stopper.
Mold-assisted Iridized lead glass.
Shape #1455, p. 240 of Gardner.
Marked “Steuben” “1455” “Aurene”.
Reference:
Steuben perfumes and atomizers were very popular items. This shape, called melon ribbed, owing to the six blown out lobes at the foot was one of Mr. Carder’s most endearing designs. It was produced for more than twenty years in many sizes and colors. The examples in Verre de Soie would frequently be combined with contrasting colored stoppers. This design was also engraved by Hawkes or at Steuben's own cutting room. Many beautiful examples are also found enrobed in a rich overlay of sterling silver fretwork, most commonly done by the Alvin company of new York city. The 4-1/2" size is readily available in most colors and techniques. The 6-1/2" inch size can be found with a little more difficulty. Larger examples are scarce.
Pictured on p. 78 of A Guide to Colored Steuben Glass by Eric E. Ericson (Book One). At p. 99 a copy of the 1932 sales catalog shows this perfume retailed for $3.00.
