Item Details
Description
DESCRIPTION: Steuben brown Aurene vase cased over translucent white with criss-crossed brown and white threading rubbed into, Intarsia Decoration, gold Aurene collar.
Shape #2737, Gardner p. 269
Marked AURENE.

Reference:
A Smithsonian owned piece is pictured in The Glass of Frederick Carder by Paul V. Gardner. Plate IX, 9. At p. 64 the author describes Brown Aurene, The so-called brown Aurene is similar to the gold and blue Aurenes in that it has an iridescent surface that was produced by tin chloride sprayed at the fire in the same manner. The glass itself is a brown glass colored with iron or nickel oxide and cased(or flashed) over Calcite glass.
At p. 75 describing early Intarsia, One form included a crisscross design usually applied to the Aurene glass necks of vases or the borders of lampshades; it consisted of overlapping threads of glass pulled with a hook to give a zigzag pattern. These applied decorations were rubbed down while the glass was hot, and so were pushed into the matrix glass and actually formed an inlaid decoration, which justified the name Intarsia. This type of Intarsia decoration was also used on Tyrian and Brown Aurene, and is occasionally found on other colors.
In the Fieldstone Porch Presents Creations by Carder of Steubenby Philpot at Item 18 of Calcite and some other bases for Aurene decoration, Mr. Carder is quoted as saying when describing a Brown aurene lamp shade, a glass colored by ferric oxide and other materials flashed on Calcite or some other semi-translucent material like alabaster I made very little with the exception of lamp shades (This shade has a Calcite base flashed with brown and is decorated with a gold Aurene band. The design on the band is also Calcite.)
