Description
A modern Chinese gilt bronze statue of the female Buddha known as Tara. Tara sits on a double lotus pedestal in a relaxed pose with her feet loosely crossed and her left hand leaning on the pedestal behind her in vitarka mudra. Her right hand holds an open lotus in front of her chest. She is adorned in an assortment of jewelry including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, and a crown over an elaborate top knot with a finial. She wears a dhoti, and a thin shawl is draped over her arms and shoulders beneath long tendrils of her hair.
Dimensions are: 6 1/2 inches tall X 4 1/4 inches wide, 16.5 cm X 10.8 cm. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is wear to the gilt and to the blue paint of the hair. The bottom is missing, and there are several minor dents to the base.
Provenance: From a private New York collection.
