Description
SARGENT, Winthrop (1825-1870). The History of an Expedition against Fort Du Quesne, in 1755; under Major-General Edward Braddock. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Co., 1855. 8vo. 423, [1]pp. 11 maps and plates. Publisher's blindstamped brown cloth.
First edition of an important history of the French and Indian War.
To a remarkable degree, the story of the French and Indian War dropped off the radar of American historians after the American Revolution. ... It was only in the 1850s, as a number of editors, historical societies, and book clubs began to publish original narratives, that some attention began to be paid to the events of 1755-63. Sargent's volume begins with a lengthy introduction by himself, but the heart of the work is the journal of Lieutenant Robert Orme. Although a junior officer, Orme was a favorite of General Braddock and acted as his aide. He thus witnessed many events firsthand (Reese).
Best account of the Braddock disaster (Howes).
Howes S112; Clark 306; Reese, Struggle for North America 98.
