Description
North America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A lovely chest composed of four lateral walls, a base made from multiple wooden slats, and a form-fitting lid that features curved wood slats extending downwards on 2 sides. The lid has an iron latch that fits snugly into a gorgeous iron lock plate comprised of several petaloid embellishments on the front of the chest body and a petite keyhole. Each corner of the piece is supported by beautiful iron brackets with trefoil forms at each end, while a pair of sturdy iron handles can be found on both shorter sides of the vessel. Though the interior displays no evidence of its previous contents, a chest like this example could have held any number of clothing items, tools, toys, blankets, or other items a Spanish settler would find of use. Size: 47.5" L x 21" W x 18.75" H (120.6 cm x 53.3 cm x 47.6 cm)
