Description
Ca. 400-300 BC. Daunian. A large pottery krater with a globular body, funnel-shaped neck, and a strap handle. The body is decorated with a series of red and brown linear, chain, and chevron designs; the mouth is embellished with a lozenge decoration. Daunian pottery was produced in Daunia, the modern day region of Apulia (Puglia) in Southern Italy, beginning as early as 7th century BC. The vessels were formed by hand, rather than thrown on a potter's wheel and are characterised by buff coloured clay decorated with geometric patterns. Excellent condition. Size: L:185mm / W:235mm ; 1.4kg. Provenance: From the private collection of a Kent gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s on the UK /European art markets.
