Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A charming brass vessel with a hinged lid and four feet. The box is cast in the shape of a rounded bird, with raised and etched motifs along the exterior. The lid features the bird's head with an open beak and dotted areas that create wings. The lid opens on a hinge to reveal the hemispherical interior. A clasp on the lid has an integral ring which may have once supported a lock to secure the vessel. A wonderful container that probably had a ritualistic use or held valuable items. Size: 3" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
