Description
Ancient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 500 to 450 BCE. An outstanding Attic mastoid cup presenting a narrow, circular base and impressively thin walls that spread outwards to a rounded shoulder, a corseted neck, and a wide, flared rim. The body and interior of the elegant cup is coated in a lustrous hue of black, while the exterior of the rim features 2 registers of heart-shaped motifs divided by a horizontal striation, all in the black figure technique on an orange-hued ground. A lovely example from ancient Athens! Size: 3.4" in diameter x 3.5" H (8.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
The mastos form seems to be deliberately breast-shaped, based on archaeological findings suggesting ritual functions for these cups. Mastoid cups and ceramic votive representations of breasts have been found at sanctuaries to Diana and Hercules - two figures in classical religion associated with birth, nursing, and rearing children. Fascinatingly, some of these even have dedications made by wet nurses. Some scholars theorize that the drinking of breast milk from a vessel like this one by an elderly or deathly ill adult symbolized rebirth in the afterlife.
Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
